JUST LANDED

There’s little that excites me more than seeing a new animal I’ve never seen before. It’s called a “lifer.” The next days there’ll be lots of them. Just landed. It’s overcast and the water looks cold. Glad I brought my super thick wet suit and head covering. Landed on Baltra island. The first island we’re going to (after a delicious lunch and 3 hour nap) is Seymour island, which happens to be my mother’s maiden name and my middle name, so I consider this ancestral. Darwin never came to this island. We are divided into two groups, there are the ones making the longer, faster hike and us– Michele, Cheryl, Nathalie. And me–making the shorter, slower hike. This doesn’t fit my self-image but it corresponds to my present reality. We saw seals, Blue-footed boobies, land iguanas and frigate birds right away. Like all the islands, this is of volcanic origin. We have to stick to a path despite attempts to go off and get closer to the unafraid animals. Now we’re back to wash up and go to dinner. See you next time Arriving at galapagos. Real flat and from the distance, innocuous.. Which shows–gotta slow down and look close to really see Seals sleeping on the benches at the boat landing. First zodiac leaving for Seymour Island excursion Lucho Verdesto, our naturalist. The slow and steady group Juvenile land iguana A land iguana resting next to an iguana. Mama frigate feeding her young A not-so-young sea lion nursing her mother The girls, fascinated. Our boat, the National Geographic Islander, which belongs to Lindblad Expeditions Baby Penguin A female Blue- Footed booby who just hatched a chick. A young frigate bird who was surveying a sea lion Galapagos land iguana Female land iguana A sleeping seal under a bush. Reminds me of Tulea. Resting juvenile frigate birds Polosanto or Holy Wood. It has lost it’s leaves right now. It is in the incense family. Galapagos sunset

DAY ONE/GALAPAGOS

Here we are, all 43 of us, in the lobby of the Hilton in Guyalquil getting ready to leave for the airport to take a very small plane to the Galapagos where we board the Islander, the name of our boat. Driving through the city to the airport it’s clear that this is a poor country, suffering from an economic recession far longer than the US. AeroGal, the airline, has an iguana on the tail. Bodega at the airport. The ecuadoran army and air force have bases here but otherwise no people live on the island. They come to work in the bodegas and for when planes come in and then leave. Simone, Troy and Viva in airport Zach and Lisa Worden–friends of the Bickfords. Jewelle and her granddaughter, Nathalie Lansbury Elizabeth and George Lansbury Jewelle Bickford and her daughter, Emily Lansbury. Nat Bickford See you soon

ECUADOR

Troy’s sweat shirt Wonderful photographer, Lucinda Bunnen, from Atlanta. Melinda Bunnen, Lucindas daughter Judy and Scott Lampert, friends of Paul Hagedorn and Lucinda. Rick and Lisa Myers, dear friends from Dalton in north Georgia. Rick is on my board of directors Simone and Viva sleeping. Phil and Reedy Hickey. Reedy is on my board. Kelly and Wiley Horn We all had to wear masks when we got off the plane It’s a 5 hour flight from Atlanta to Guayaquil, Ecuador where we spend the night. Tomorrow morning we fly to the Galapagos and board our boat. Some friends flew from New York to Miami and then to Guayaquil. On this flight is my family, Phil and Reedy Hicky (Reedy is on the G-CAPP board), Kelly Horton and her husband, Wylie; Paul Hagedorn who is an art photographer from Atlanta and his daughter; and Cheryl Dixon, a business woman who’s been involved with G-CAPP for a long time. We are all excited about this trip which has been planned for almost 2 years. It is something we have all wanted to do but, in addition, it is a fundraiser for G-CAPP. Two days ago the play had just started. (My watch says it’s 8:03pm).

BEING HOME

Tulea is so happy to be home. When she got out of the elevator she ran to the door of our loft-well, not ran, skipped is more like it, and I mean it literally. She skips. I never knew another dog who skips. She raced around the place looking for Mouse, the brindle cat she grew up with and loved to play with. Mouse would perch on the back of the couch and jump on top of Tulea when she went by and then they’d roll around and wrestle. But for reasons we don’t understand, Mouse began to poop on my furniture so she now lives with Carole and Tommy and there’ve been no more problems. Carole brought Mouse over today and Tulea was so excited. She was all over Mouse, but Mouse could have cared less. Poor Tulea-except on the way to the airport, I will drop her off with the couple who pet sit and who Tulea adores. It’s more than mutual and they have two small dogs and two big cats that Tulea also loves. The couple are middle aged and their business is called ManyPaws-get it, menopause. Cute, huh? Tulea gets so excited when she realizes she’s at their house that she forgets that we’ll be apart for awhile. It makes it so much easier to leave. Tulea with Daphne, Jane and her second family. Tulea’s home away from home Over lunch I will have a meeting with James Andrews about growing my blog, twittering, FaceBook, and hooking up with TONIC to sell my mug shot merchandise. James was at the Ludacris event last night doing a streaming video with his iphone and something called Ustream. Gotta leave for the airport. Will be blogging and twittering from Equdor and the Galapagos. Look what Susan Kellerman just sent, knowing I was about to depart for the Galapagos…with the words “Don’t forget your other family.” Isn’t that fantastic? Like I ever could. From the left it’s Samantha, Don, Caitlin (in the back-my understudy), Diane, me, Cletus, Colin In car en route to airport with Malcolm on my lap. Nathalie, Troy, Vanessa and Viva in Delta Lounge Simone and Troy at airport See you next time.
