COLONIAL QUITO IN ECUADOR

We’re in the Andes at an altitude of 9000 ft, at the foot of an active volcano. We have several hours before our plane leaves for Atlanta and, travel weary though we are, we’re taking advantage of this layover to take a tour of the colonial parts of the city which was the first city that U.N.E.S.C.O. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1978. It is beautiful, colorful and unique. I’d be happy to return some day with more time to spend.

It’s a 6 hour flight to Atlanta and we get in at 5:30am. Yikes! Carole will pick Tulea up at ManyPaws (her sitters) and I will be reunited with her when I awake–because I intend to take a nap when I get home so I’ll be in my right mind for unpacking and repacking and going to my office -first time since the beginning of January.

 See you next time.

THE LAST DAY

We’re sad to see the trip drawing to a close. If any of you are ever contemplating a trip to Galapagos, I cannot recommend the Lindblad/National Geographic Expedition enough. Everything was perfect! Yesterday we saw gorgeous flamingos in a brackish lagoon. Today we snorkeled more with sea lions. I kayaked with Vivian Schneider which means I laughed a lot. We are about to go on our last nature hikes. Kayaking with my friend Vivian off the Island of Espanola. (click photo to enlarge – by: Lucho Verdesoto) Last night we had a barbecue on the top deck and folks brought out their ipods and danced. I started to but soon realized that I was pushing my luck–wild dancing on a rolling ship with MY knee issues? I don’t think so. My knee has felt better ever since we crossed the equator. I haven’t needed a cane since then (except when we are walking over rough lava beds but then everyone uses a walking stick). Don’t know if you know it (members of the audiences didn’t seem to notice) but I played our last 4 performances with a cane. I was in agony. The cortisone wasn’t working any more and I had reached my max of that steroid. As I revealed on the David Letterman Show, I am having knee replacement surgery mid June. Was meant to have it in January but postponed due to the play and had cortisone shots instead to kill the pain–till it stopped working. Anyway, back to last night’s party: When I woke up, all everyone was talking about was Malcolm’s dancing. My grandson tends to be serious, a reader, often off by himself. But last night he morphed into a wild and crazy guy who danced with everyone, all sorts of styles. I will try to post some photos if I can. I’m told lots were taken. Gottago hike. Enjoying the view of the Islands (by: Lucho Verdesoto) See you next time.

MALCOLM TURNED 10!!!!!

Yesterday my grandson turned ten and we had such a fun dinner with cake and toilet paper decorations that the other kids on the boat made and hung. Malcolm stuck his whole face in the gooey chocolate cake, then used his hands to mold the cake into various shapes. It was disgusting and funny and then my son, Troy, did imitations of sea lions and land iguanas that included snorting out salt water which the iguanas do–rather loudly. He did a great imitation of a dancing blue-footed booby and topped it off with the male frigate bird with the red pouch all inflated. It was totally spontaneous and had us rolling with laughter. Check out my pictures to see what animals I’m referring to. A professional videographer has been filming the trip and when I get back we’ll post it on this blog. See you next time.
