Slumdog Slam

feb23

Hooray!! I am so happy for the brilliant Danny Boyle and his team’s HUGE success!!! As I said in an earlier blog, my son, Troy, did Danny’s last movie with him, “Sunshine” and fell in love with him, so here’s a photo Simone (Troy’s fab wife) sent me from an Oscar party last night.

I was in bed sick and had such fun twittering about my reactions during the Oscars. It never occured to me that people would really get excited about a 2-time Oscar winner twittering about the Oscars. People asked me why I wasn’t there. Well, that would be because I am doing a fantastic Broadway play. Plus sick. Still am. But did The View this morning (always such a fun show to do. I’ve known Barbara for eons). Now I am getting ready for an Associated Press interview and then I’m doing the NYT Times Talk interview before an audience in the amazing new Times building together with Moises Kaufman, writer/director of the play (“33 Variations”). THEN a fundraiser called Defying Inquality for equal gay marriage rights at the Gershwin Theatre. Kinda excited cause I heard Keith Olbermann will also be there. (Dare I hope Rachel Maddow too??) I am presenting a $250,000 check from the producers and creators of “Wicked”. Cool, huh? All this on my day off.

See you next time

  2. Saw you on The View this morning…looked fabulous! Would never have known you weren’t feeling well. Sending “get well” wishes your way!

  3. Great seeing you on The View today! Found your blog because someone mentioned it at Rosie’s blog. Big fan of yours, I hope you feel better soon! Healing thoughts your way 🙂

  4. Hi Jane, I was one of those enjoying your tweets during the Oscar’s last night. Sorry to hear you are ill though. It was an incredible evening, I believe the most entertaining in years.

I am new to Twitter and not sure how I was lucky enough to find you but truly enjoying getting to know another side of you. I’ve admired your talent and passion for what’s right for many years now.

Hope you are feeling better very soon!

  5. Saw you on the View this morning. Break a leg in your show. Looking forward to meeting you at the WIFV-DC Gala in September.

  6. hi i follow you on twitter – but its hard to write a personal note.. read the NYT article on sunday in which you talk about now that you’re on broadway, you thinking more about your dad. i couldn’t help noticing in the film tributes on the Oscar show last night – that both YOU and your dad were in separate clip packages – you for best actress – he for Best Picture montage. If you noticed, both images were very quick cuts – I couldn’t help wondering if you thought that this was a “sign’ from your dad – that he’s watching over you? I know for me, I often ASK for these signs from my parents on the other side, and I only get them when I really NEED for them to comfort me or to help me through a tough time.. just wondering.. I know you are but a mere mortal, but I so admire you as an actress and an activist. I just loved you in “Agnes of God”. I’ll drop everything to see that film when its on… see you on twitter….feel better and enjoy your run on Broadway..I’m so happy for you! best, roger c. memos ps.. the quote I sent you on twitter was in regard to the picketers outside the theater ( the vets). I’m sorry you have to always relive that unfortunate situation.

  7. I had taped “The View” and watched it this evening. You look great, always do. It’s a fun show to watch I can imagine how fun it was to be on. Here I am, 15 years old and wake up early on school vacations just to catch that show. Great stuff, even better with you on.

I love how no matter how busy you are (and good Lord, you are really on the go!) you never forget about your fans here on your blog. Jane, you are simply the best!

    – Kelsey

  8. Loved your twitter about not having to worry about the cameras at the Oscars panning your way only to catch you picking your teeth. Everyone always looks so elegant, but knowing how beastly uncomfortable it can be to be that “gussied up,” there is the potential for embarrassing fidgeting, eh? 😉

Feel better. Be glad it’s not the flu going around down here in Texas.

  9. Saw you on The View this morning, and was so excited to hear that you have a blog. You are brave. I am having a good time reading your past (and oh so interesting) posts.

  10. Jane,

I just saw your piece on The View. Brilliant.
Thank you for exploring new ways to “reach out” to us. I hear you!
And, as always, was so delighted to watch your interview this morning and to discover your blog.

    With great admiration,

    Rachel

  11. So nice to see you on the View, you still look wonderful.
You sure are keeping busy. Take care

  12. Just wanted to tell you that I think you looked great today on The View! I just read your Blog after the show, it is great reading, thanks for sharing! If I were in New York, I’d come see your play. Love you AND Colin Hanks, too. Take care and hope you feel better soon! =)

  13. It would have been nice to see you at the Oscars last night (especially on the stage when the Best Actress award was being presented), but it’s understandable that you didn’t go with all these wonderful events in NYC.

Saw your segment on The View—lovely! I could hear in your voice that you still haven’t totally fought off that cold. I hope it soon goes away for you.

    All my best,
    Amanda

  14. Jane Fonda, you fabulous woman, you! I just finished my tivoed episode of today’s VIEW. Would have loved to see you dish with dear Whoopi (oh well) but must say I so DIG the way you came right out with your age. A gorgeous 71. You’re a wonderful model of aging with soul/wit/energy/passion. I love that you’re taking on this deep rich role (on stage) now. YOu really are something. GO WOMAN GO!
p.s. delighted to have found your blog. has a real authentic feel to it.

  15. Jane — I saw you on the view (well via DVR) and you were great, would have never guessed you were sick. I’ve got to get to NYC to see your play, it looks fascinating. I’ll be reading your blog now — you rate with Andrew Sullivan for daily reading (well CNN, Politico, Bloomberg and CNBC, but you don’t talk about the economy, thank god!).

    Get healthy!

  16. Loved you on the View today — would have never guessed you were sick. Get better! I’m going to start reading your blog — up there with some of my other favorites. Love the fact that you LOVE Rachel Maddow — Makes sense!

    Take care!

  17. I hope you feel better soon. I caught your interview on ‘the View’ –> great stuff.

    What a BUSY day, WOW!

I’ll be back to read about your night at the Gershwin Theatre.

  18. Watched you on the View today and for beind sick you sure look great. With your schedule you have no time to be sick…and I thought I was busy!!! We will be in N.Y. in two weeks and will try and see your play. I am just trying to figure this Twitter thing out, who would have thought I could connect with Jane Fonda.
    Best regards,

  19. hi Jane saw you on the view today
    Love your blogging thank you
you have always been one of my favorites:)

  20. Gosh, I’m nuts about you. 🙂

I could go on (and probably will in a future post) but today I’m writing because you and your brother made me cry tonight. I was watching “East of Eden” on TCM and after it was over a short piece about your father narrated by you and Peter came on. Gosh, that was really lovely, Jane. Knowing how far you’ve come – the both of you – with your father and all that history, and hearing the acceptance, appreciation and celebration of him now…I’m just gutted. I don’t know your entire inner struggle and journey (only you do), but I have one with my own mother. She neglected me in some very painful ways, however, she taught me some wonderful things too. I try very hard to remember that instead of being hurt. It’s a struggle sometimes, even now. Oh, I just love you so much, Jane. I have for such a long time and I wish you continued joy in life.

  21. Troy is so handsome, Jane, and such a wonderful actor! Thanks for giving him to the world. 🙂

  22. Jane ,
You did not look sick at all on The View you looked beautiful.
Your description of the play made me wish I lived in NY.
    Best wishes
    dona

  23. Jane, I attended the NYT Times Talk interview last night, and even though you still weren’t feeling your best, you were there giving your best, and entirely present. You are such an example of how a person can live their life, making a difference, having multiple careers, and keep growing, and getting even better.
What a staggering loss for Ted.

Your book was such an interesting read, and so very warm. It was one of those “only in New York” special times to finally get to see you and listen to you last night. And Teula certainly watched with rapt attention.

I have tickets to your play tonight and I’m looking forward to it.

    Bill Hillman

  24. You are awesome!

  25. Hi Jane!

Just strarted reading you blog, as I heard you talk about it on The View. I love it! Keep up the awesome work!

  26. Jane, I LOVE your new blog. I’ve added it to my daily Web sweep ritual. Your memoir is one of my favorite books ever, so it reads like a low-key continuation of sorts. Can’t wait to see 33 VARIATIONS. I’m planning a NY trip for precisely that purpose before closing curtain!

  27. Jane, I saw all the films nominated this year (which is very unusual for me) So, I had a vested interest in the winners. I loved SLUMDOG best of all, and I was rooting for all the wins.

I just “found” you today after seeing you on THE VIEW. Thanks for blogging. I’ve followed your career for 40 years.
And I love seeing you on screen and have always admired you.

You probably don’t remember, but we met back in 1969 in Columbia, SC. Back then I was a protester and you were my idle.

  28. Thank you for your book …. so honest …. a lovely gift to the reader …. I asked people to read it! People often forget it is called GIVE a performance …. thank you for not stopping …. or forgetting.

    God Bless you!

  29. That’s so wonderful that you are blogging! Always a fan of your films and your marvellous acting! Its also so great your advocating such an important cause.

  30. God bless you for attending the marriage equality benefit. I hope you saw Rachel Maddow! She is SUCH a breath of intelligent fresh air. And by the way, your blog is terrific!!

  31. This doesn’t sound like a day off — or a sick day, Jane. But it does sound totally worthy and fun. Do take good care though….I hope you rested up today.

  32. Don’t you just love those two? I was so excited when Rachel Maddow got her own show!!
Please continue to take warm care of yourself!
You are cherished, you know, by many!

  33. Jane, loved seeing you on The View, so great that you blog and Twitter too 😉
Much success with your new play… and you still look mahvelous!

  34. I saw you on The View. I am very happy to know from that show that you are in a new project and that you are blogging and tweeting!
I think it is great to learn new stuff! I think it feels much cooler to be over 40 and keeping up with the “kids” LOL.
The bloggosphere has opened up my world, I hope you enjoy the ride!
The world gets very small, very fast when you can see it through the net.
    Thanks for sharing…

  35. I’m so happy for Danny Boyle and Slumdog, honestly how can you deny a man with such a fantastic smile? The entire cast is just beautiful. Love them.

And I hope you feel better soon!

  36. Hi Jane- I’ve been having so much fun reading your blog after being a fan for so many years. Now I have to thank you personally for standing up for marriage rights for gays and lesbians– my husband’s and my wedding was the most joyful, surprising, meaningful day of either of our lives so far, and to think that the voters could (and would!) simply nullify it is both heartbreaking and enraging. Thank you for continuing to support us! -Cristian

  37. I’ve always been a huge fan. I read your book and have seen so many of your movies over the years. You are always so courageous, open and committed to causes that you feel are important. You’re an inspiration.

  38. I was in the front row of the second preview of your play (actually, for Act One I was in the fifth row, but had to move up to a vacant seat to get away from a man with too much cologne; one of the typical hazards of theater-going), but only today learned of your blog.

The play was engaging, intelligent and entertaining. Most importantly, it dealt with profound subject matter without getting heavy handed or dreary, or for that matter, self-important. It proved that you can explore powerful, if not tragic situations, while maintaining a sense of wit. Your performance was both vulnerable and self-assured. A real treat.

I had recently read your autobiography and was blown away, not only by the multitude of subjects you covered and the passion and honesty you displayed, but by the high quality of the writing. I was wondering if it was written with only the assistance of your editor, or if there was unbilled ghost writer helping you. In any case, one of the best autobiographies I’ve ever read.

One thing I would disagree with you about is your dismissal of your film Tout Va Bien, (although I can understand your disatisfaction with the circumstances surrounding the production). Admittedly, I’m a staunch Godard afficianado, so I’m biased, but I really think it is a remarkable film that is worth a second look on your part. (It is available in excellent DVD edition put out by Criterion.)

Being enamoured of you on screen for so many years, I was thrilled to have witnessed you performing on stage. I’m sorry I missed the Q&A you did for a recent screening of FTA, but look forward to finally getting that film on DVD when it is released in the next few days.

I wish you great success in this production and all the best in life.

  39. It really is OK to take a break when you are sick, Jane. Being in a Broadway Show is exhausting all on its own. Add sickness and all these interviews…and you’re not 20 (nor am I). Get some rest girl!

  40. Saw you here in Australia on the view talking about the play, wished I was in New York to see you
Wonderful to see you embracing blogging and twitter.

Hoping to see you at Blog World Expo in Vegas in October, have said you would be a great Keynote Speaker. hear you here on the Gold Coast 2 years ago

    Namaste

  42. Hollywood VERY RARELY sees the likes of these classic actors. They’ll ALWAYS be treasured.

    Love you Ms. Fonda!

  43. Dear Jane Fonda
Through your acting, in your book, your blog your search for the truth is an inspiration to me.
In you pursuit of honesty you force me examine my own need for truth. And make me want to continue on my own creative road.
    With Admiration
    For all you have done.
    Eduardo Machado
    Playwright

PS Can not wait to see the play!

  44. Jane – would you remember me from decades ago? I followed you like a crazed fan all the way to your car when I was 18 in 1979 when you spoke with Tom Hayden at SUNY Binghamton, then saw you filming at the Mus of Natl History Rollerball one night with my parents, and then took your exercise class at the Sheraton in NYC and I said to you “this is our close encounter for the third time!” … you look wonderful. Just saw China Syndrome after so many years the other night … how quickly time flies!!!

  45. Hi Jane,
I saw you on “The View” you said you twittered and here I am.. I usually check it out just about every day. I have always admired you. You could be the reason I have exercised daily all these years. You look fabulous and you are a real inspiration. I love reading your twitter and blog.. makes me want to see your play. And yes I agree Rachel Maddow is very cool. I learn a lot from both of you.. keep it up!

  46. I just saw slumdog a couple of weeks ago–I am absolutely estatic about that film!
