Positive Attitude

From: Julie

Question: Hi Jane,
I love your site.
I have been through so much in my life.
I lost my dad to suicide when I was 7 and my brother age 29 to diabetes and recently my mom on Thanksgiving Day.
I have NO family and no one at all to reminisce with about my life.
It’s as though I don’t exist or never did.
I have no one to call to ask something like “where was that we used to go fishing when we were kids” I feel very ‘orphaned’.
I would so appreciate some advice on how to stay strong and find some peace and enjoyment for the rest of my life.
I feel like my life ended when I lost my mother.

Kindly,
Julie

Answer: That is too profound a question to answer like this, but we may lose our blood family but there is always the possibility of a chosen family. Sometimes the chosen family can be closer and more supportive. Find a way to volunteer or get involved in church or some way to meet new people.

  1. Ms. Fonda, in reference to Julie who lost her dad and brother and mom, and feels orphaned: Although I am not orphaned, I am 40 and felt the need to write and write and write about my life. I’m actually looking now to get it published, BUT my point is …write down what you know, the best you know it. Make it a story, not just a fact sheet, Julie. Talk about good times, talk about bad times. It’s hard sometimes (I wrote my 300 pages in five weeks, but I am a writer at heart), but it’s SO truly therapeutic. Bitterness and hatred and resentment I had for 20 or 30 years melted away as I saw the words come to life on a page. Tell your story. You never know who it will help.

  2. They say that the emptiness of the soul is the closest
place to enlightenment- you are closest to being able
to feel the reverse- there are five stage of inner restlessness-
this is the last and final and few get here
-the Bodhi Center in Malibu is wonderful as are
The ARt of Living Centers- one downtown and one in Redondo
-its hard to accept, that this pain could be close to extreme
joy- but why not give it a shot? What have you got to lose?
