George Santayana Quote

“Never have I enjoyed youth so thoroughly as I have in my old
age…Nothing is inherently and invincibly young except spirit. And
spirit can enter a human being perhaps better in the quiet of old age
and dwell there more undisturbed than in the turmoil of adventure.”

-George Santayana

  1. Dear Jane,

(It feels strangely impolite to call you by your first name. . .)

That’s lovely. Thank you for the Santayana quote.

    Hope you are feeling better.

Thanks to the wonders of modern technology I did see you on the “Today” show. You looked wonderful. And, yes, why would anyone want to stop working if they love what they do, do it well and feel well (with a little chicken soup).

    Best regards,
    Tish

  2. I saw a sign in a window many years ago. It said, quite simply: The only substance is spirit.
    How very true.
Just found your blog and enjoy it very much. Thanks for all the inspiration.
    All the best…

  3. This is the first time I have “blogged”, so here goes! I rarely watch daytime t.v., however, today I watched “The View” and I was so inspired to see and hear what Jane Fonda had to say about returning to Broadway after some 40+ years. She also wanted to challenge the theory “that you can’t teach old dogs new tricks!” After listening to Ms. Fonda’s spirited reply, I have renewed hope for my third career! I am sixty and Iam an English graduate student, hoping to teach in a junior college, or purhaps become a journalist! Thank-you Ms Fonda and for the wonderful, renewed “baby boomers!”

  4. Completely thrilled to learn of your “blog” on The View today….thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me a peek into your life. I have admired you for decades but the admiration meter rose high seeing you in Vagina Monologues in NY and NOLA! You rock as an advocate for women’s rights, as a mother, actress, individual and I am honored to share this time on earth with you in it!

  5. So very true. One of most touching words I ever read in middle age now. Also the J. Campbell words are so wise. I admire you for your youth inside & outside. Cause that means you really have struggle and fought for your health of body, mind & soul in a relaxed manner.
No fanatisms. Thats the key. Living the life of the spirit is key for old age but with a clear mind and heart.
Best and take good care of that brand new knee 🙂
    Enjoy
