The Hardest Becomes The Easiest

March 4th I have long noticed that the scene in a film script that seemed the most daunting upon first readings would invariably end up being my best scene. This happened repeatedly over the years. This afternoon during the matinee, I realized that the same has happened with this play. There are two scenes that I have felt awkward about from the beginning that are becoming my favorites. What’s that about? Maybe it’s that these are scenes that made less sense until I sank deeper into the character and got braver with the illness she suffers from. Elizabeth Lesser and four of her friends came back to say hello after the play. Elizabeth is a founder and director of the Omega Institute in Rochester, NY., a center for human growth and spiritual practice. For a number of years running, Elizabeth and Eve Ensler have jointly organized a 3-day “Women and Power” conference at the Institute. I have spoken there on a number of occasions and performed with Kerry Washington in Eve’s play, “Necessary Targets.” I have wanted Elizabeth to see “33 Variations” because I was sure she would respond to the play’s many levels of intelligence and spirit. I was right. She did and so did her friends. Elizabeth’s book, “Broken Open,” is one I have sent to many people who are confronting tragedy and crisis.  It shows how the other side of tragedy is opportunity to grow and deepen—if one allows it to be and remains open to the signals when they appear. Elizabeth is a person of great depth and kindness. When Oprah did her intense, interactive radio show about Eckhart Tolle’s “The New Earth,” she asked Elizabeth to develop the curriculum for it. Now she has asked her to do interviews for her new radio show about Spirituality. Elizabeth has invited me to be her interviewee on the show in a few weeks. Chef Scott Peacock whom I wrote about in an earlier blog, saw the show for a second time this afternoon (and will come again on opening night!). He said he saw new things in the play and was moved in different places. Tonight, Rabbi Malka Drucker is coming with a friend. Malka is a progressive rabbi from Santa Fe. We spoke together at a women’s retreat last year at the Upaya Zen Center. Maybe I’ll remember to take some pictures. I’ve missed so many opportunities these last weeks to memorialize my friends backstage on my blog. Hi to dear Karen out there in Boseman, Montana—my friend for decades who just emailed me that she reads this blog daily. See you next time.

We officially open in one week and I’m ready. Today’s post “The Jane Fonda Workout” http://is.gd/lwFs #theatre #actors # Please try this link http://is.gd/lwH2 #

The Jane Fonda Workout

It’s Monday so it’s our day off. In one week we officially open. I’m ready for this. Not nervous at all about the critics coming this week. I am confident in the strength of the play…in its essential worth. It’s about something. It moves people, makes them think. Can’t wait to have my family see it. Today I had lunch with Julie LaFond, the woman who ran my Workout business for many years. We got to know each other so well over time, spent so much time together both on the job and off, that when we got together today it felt like we’d just seen each other a short time ago. Ever had that experience with someone you’ve known really well? You just drop back into sync like there’s been no in between-time. I commented on it to her and she admitted she felt the same. Still, we had lots to catch up on…happy things and sad. It snowed today so I had to carry Tulea everywhere. God forbid she should get her freshly groomed paws frost bit! I misspelled a word at the end of yesterday’s blog: I wrote “illicit” instead of “elicit.” Several watchful friends picked up on it. Illicit means unlawful or dishonest. Elicit means to bring forth. I am now going to watch a video I just got made by the Jane Fonda Center at Emory School of Medicine to be viewed by teens in clinic waiting rooms. Its part of a series we’ve done. This one is about helping teens handle their sexual feelings and behaviors in healthy, positive ways. See you next time.

Getting ready to watch “Brothers and Sisters” 2 hour special. I adore Sally. Blog post I just wrote from my blackberry http://is.gd/lmyd #

God’s Mercy

I am blogging on my blackberry. I’m home after the performance (and too much wine!) and an extraordinary hour after the show backstage with Gloria Steinem (her 2nd time seeing it. She saw it at the first preview), Christine Lahti, and Scott Peacock. Scott is the award winning chef at the Decatur, Ga restaurant, Watershed, owned by the Indigo Girls. Scott is a very close friend of mine. He’ll be back on opening night with another close friend, Robin Laughlin, who I just introduced him to. (I knew they were meant to be buddies). It made me so happy to sit in my dressing room with Gloria, Christine and Scott, talking about the play and catching up on life. Christine’s in NY for 4 days to see 6 plays. She just saw “God of Carnage” which she adored. It is always profound to have Gloria weigh in on anything, especially a play like “33 Variations.” All 3 of them were really moved by it–and none of them are of the “B.S. Variety.” Know what I mean? I want to comment on a couple of comment/questions about the blog. One comment asked about the meaning of the “song the cast all sings together” toward the play’s end.” We are singing the “Kyrie Elyeison” vocal chorus in Beethoven’s “Missa”–his famous Mass. It is a plea to god for mercy.” If you saw the play, you will understand why, at that moment, both me and my family/ colleagues as well as Beethoven’s need to ask for God’s mercy. There was another question I wanted to address but I can’t remember and I’m too tired to look up the comments. I will soon be in bed watching the 2-hour special of “Brothers and Sisters.” I adore Sally Field–and Gloria, and Christine and Scott. I am so lucky to have such good friends. But you know what age has taught me? One must be intentional about friendship. We are all so busy. We must really make an effort to lovingly stay in touch with those we want to be friends with. Ahhhhhh. I just remembered the other comment I wanted to comment on: someone asked if I intended to keep blogging once the play is over. That’s a tough one. I am enjoying blogging and receiving the instant feedback. But there is something about blogging that slightly disturbs me. It has to do with its effect on ego. I can’t get into this now, but over the coming months I have to give this ego issue some thought. Maybe I can ellicit your thoughts on this as well. See you next time.
