June 21
It’s the Summer Solstice today, the longest day of the year, the beginning of summer and the exact opposite side of the year (which I think of as a circle with June at the top and Dec at the bottom) from my December 21st birthday. I like the solstices, natural events that the ancients (of all ethnicities) developed their calendars around and that were considered important, sacred, transitional events. I think of Stonehenge in England and Machu Picchu in Peru where you can see their sun dials and stone configurations that would be flooded with light only at the Solstices.
On another spectrum of data: I just heard today that Debbie Reynolds raised more than $19 million from the auction of her costume collection that I mentioned in my last blog. A Canadian consortium that has all of Marilyn Monroe’s estate and possessions bought her white “Seven Year Itch” dress (that was blown upwards when she stood on the subway vent) for many millions. When asked about her collection, Debbie said, “I never invested in Jewelry or homes. I just invested in costumes and bad marriages!” What a card!!

Hello Jane,
Hope your well, seem like a good time to comment, a happy Summer Solstice to you and your loved ones. Was just reading about brother Peter’s promoting a new documentary at the Cannes film festival in France last weekend. A happy new bride Margaret ‘Parky’ Devogelaere in Hawaii. For a Hollywood child, or a child of Hollywood Peter Fonda as done very well. Read that before flying off to Honolulu saying, “not even a Federal Air Marshal could keep him out of the Mile High Club.”
Peter still seem, like a powerhouse out and about, like I have side before, he is one of the most underrated actors in the history of film. A good luck to him.

Dear, lovely Jane. I live in the north of sweden and the sun never sets in june and it is in many ways a magic time. On friday we celebrate that, midsummereve “midsommarafton”, it’s an old tradition since many MANY hundred years back in time. I love it.
I was born on the 21th of april, many people has told me that the number 21 is special and babies who’s born that date has a very special connection with that number. And that we often become very strong and special persons! : )

I particularly enjoy the very long days here in northern Europe. Last night it went dark about 10.30 p.m. however, I was in St Petersburg, Russia at the weekend and the ‘white nights’ were pretty amazing. I was once in Island, where the sun hardly set for the entire week we were there. I love seeing how different cultures integrate these changes into their lifestyles, particularly, when at the other end of the spectrum in 6 months the sun will only rise for a few hours.
I will be in LA this coming weekend. Can’t wait for my bike ride from Redondo Beach to Venice. Try and do it every time I’m in LA. Just love it.

Debbie’s collection had several of my Dad’s (John de Cuir) sketches from Cleopatra. In fact, he had worked with her in the 80’s to design the museum that sadly, never was.
