LIV ULLMAN

I woke up thinking about the feeling I had when I looked into Liv Ullman’s eyes when she came back stage. First of all, her eyes are the color of the sky on a summer day. And they are so deep. Her face was shaking and she had a hard time speaking. I knew she would be affected by the play but I didn’t anticipate how deeply it would rock her. There are many reasons that she resonates with the play. Plus, she’s like a tuning fork-so attuned to her emotions-as anyone who has seen her in movies knows. As she said to a cast member who was escorting her across the stage, “You don’t this is the theatre.” It made me cry just to hold her and feel her empathy.

Good news: Liv will direct Cate Blanchett in “Streetcar Named Desire”, first in Sydney, Australia and then here at the Lincoln Center. That’s one not to miss!

  1. you’re doing your show and you’re on TCM in Sunday in New York … such poetry, no? LOVE YOU!

  2. You and Cate working together? In one of my favorite plays? Loving it. Can’t wait.

  3. Dear Jane, I am becoming obsessed (happily) with this play! Each time I see it reveals a new insight. I find it cathartic, inspirational and therapeutic to witness. I hope someone films it for posterity. May I say this may well be your finest work. I never thought I would say that after “The Dollmaker” which was transformational. This play transcends the sum of its’ parts. I find it to be a highly Spiritual experience! Thanks to you and the rest of the cast for letting Divine brilliance shine so brightly through your most masterful artistry!!

  4. Liv is so beautiful. She’s just wonderful.
I so wish I could come out to see your play.
    Keep it up!

  5. I came to see you on Saturday for the matinee. The entire production was amazing. I have not been touched by a play like this for many years, maybe forever. I have been following your blog and twitter for a few months now and love your entries. Thanks to the entire cast for an incredible 2 hours.

  6. Dear Ms. Fonda,
I’m the press director for the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), writing in response to your post about Liv Ullman. The production of “Streetcar Named Desire” that you mention–directed by Ms Ullman– will actually be presented in our theater in late 2009 (not at Lincoln Center). We share your enthusiasm about the production!
    Sincerely,
    Sandy Sawotka

  7. Thank you so much for writing this blog. I have an MFA in acting, and did it/studied for many years, but have stopped since it doesn’t seem to make me happy. I have been so missing the theater, and seem to have lost my connection, and recently it’s been coming back. It’s just so great to read about your process and working–reminds me of what I did love about it–and what’s so challenging and rich in it. And even makes me want to figure out how to have it in my life, more probably in a different way. I really appreciate that. And I’m stunned by Liv Ullman directing Cate Blanchett in Streetcar–I’ve been obessessing about that play lately so I’ll be sure to seek it out. Thanks again! And congrats on your great notices–wish I was in NY to see it.

  8. Liv has thee bluest eyes I’ve ever seen. They are so beautiful that they almost don’t look real.

I’ve wanted to see A Streetcar Named Desire performed on stage for so long. It’ll be a treat to finally have the pleasure of watching Cate Blanchett live. A what a great play for her to star in!

    Best,
    Amanda

    Much Love,

  10. All the performances of Streetcar are sold out here down under, when it shows in September. We are very proud of our Cate here in Australia, she is such a great actress and she is wonderful off stage/screen as well. We are very lucky to have such a great bunch of actresses and actors who are doing so well overseas. I am glad that they are finally getting the recognition that they deserve. As for Liv, well, what a legend.

  11. OMG She’s brilliant. Persona has remained on my Top Ten List for years (along with Barbarella). Hopefully I’ll get to bump into her at LC since I work there. =)
