Pestana Palace Hotel entrance
My hairstylist, Matthew Shields and I, went for 2 days to Lisbon where L’Oreal asked me to speak at a conference on beauty and aging and do a bunch of interviews. Never having been, I was delighted at the opportunity.
We stayed at the spectacular Pestana Palace Hotel built by Marquis of Valle Flor who made his wealth during colonialism as one of the major cocoa producers. The palace was recently turned into a hotel without damaging any of the structure or art of the original.

This view from my window shows the stables across the street where the Marquis kept his horses.

Staircase going to my room

This is what I looked up at when I lay in bed. It’s all so beautiful and I applaud the people who restored it, but couldn’t help thinking of the slave labor that allowed such wealth.

The corridor to my room

This is the ceiling of the room where I was interviewed.

The first evening after our arrival, the representative of L’Oreal suggested me go to the Porto Santa Maria, about 40 min north of Lisbon on the beach. I can’t recall having had a more delicious meal of fresh cray fish and bass. This was the view from our table.

The crayfish were still moving when the chef showed them to us.

It was while I was sucking on those delectable legs that my tooth—or rather the veneer on my tooth—came out.

Matthew and I had a good laugh helped along by the best bottle of Portugese white wine. I wanted to ship a case back home but they don’t export it. Worth going back for another visit. Fortunately, the head of L’Oreal Portugal has a brother who is a dentist who had just returned to town and he met me in my room after dinner to put the veneer back.

Our main course was sea bass coated in sea salt and baked

The salt is scraped away and the fish was melt-in-your-mouth fresh and delicious as were the vegetables.

The next day was the conference.

. . . and then a luncheon of most of Portugal’s beauty editors and other journalists in one of the palace’s dining rooms. It was fun until my tooth came out again

One kind lady at the lunch loaned me her fan to cover the damage until my kind new friend, the dentist, made a return trip to fix it again. That’s Matthew next to me.
We returned to Los Angeles the following day and I went straight from the airport to my dentist who, on Monday, will put a new (hopefully permanent) veneer in—just in time because we start shooting 3rd season of “Grace & Frankie” on Tuesday.
By the way, the 2nd season will start (streaming) May 6th and I assure you it is really funny…better than 1st season. We previewed the first 2 episodes of season 2 at the Tribecca Film Festival on Thursday and I am told the packed theatre laughed and even cried. There are some very touching moments. After the screening, Gayle King interviewed Lily and me and it was a lot of fun. It’s always fun with Lily.
Stay tuned.

wow, that is one beautiful place..and the food..now I’m hungry..
so excited about Frankie and Grace coming back..one of the best shows on tv…not just netflix, but on tv…love that show..and you and Lily are amazing together..
I have a chipped front tooth (same as yours) and it came off years ago..had to let it stay as I can’t afford to have it done..Medicare doesn’t think teeth or hearing are important ..so they don’t cover it..hope when Hillary becomes President(and we know she will) she will see that changed. Just because you’re old and poor doesn’t mean having good teeth or being able to hear aren’t important…

Caught a few minutes between patients and LOL’d at your picture. Nothing like a minor dental calamity to disrupt a great meal! Glad it’s repaired :-). I’ve been a huge fan for a long time, but especially after hearing you speak at a NASPAG conference in Atlanta about 10 years ago. What you said during your talk has forever (and very positively) affected me personally. I am so glad I finally discovered your website!
BTW, I was finally able to watch the entire first season of Grace and Frankie and I absolutely adored it. I can’t wait for my mom to see it as well . . . she will ~~really~~ relate! I am so looking forward to the next two seasons.
Take care!

I love that you weren’t embarrassed to take a pic without your tooth! 🙂 I’ve had
the same thing happen and know others with the same thing. Thanks for being you.
I can’t wait to see season 2 of Grace and Frankie. I loved the first so the second should
really be great!
Debra Murray
Can not wait for Grace and Frankie! I have turned a lot of my friends on to it! Such a joy!
aurie
beautiful photographs of such a grand place. i particularly enjoyed the photos of the fresh seafood, simply prepared and obviously perfectly delicious. of course so many ornate buildings from past centuries were built with either slave or next-thing-to-it labor, and the money which paid for them earned from slave/indentured labor. a strong reminder slavery /indentured was a world-wide tragedy. but aren’t you lucky to have truly world class dental work. mr shields does great work-yee gads, not to be catty, but i assumed was a wig because the texture looks so smooth with natural volume. AND, about time with Grace and Frankie !!!
SusanK
Wow! What an absolutely beautiful hotel! The coca business must have been quite impressive! I wonder what the palace was used for recently before it was turned into a hotel. Just stunning! And did I read correctly that the one picture shows the stables?! Those horses lived in a much bigger home than I do now!
Sorry about your tooth! Bad timing! Those crayfish sure got their revenge.
I can’t wait to see the next season of Grace and Frankie! Yay!
Valerie
Thanks for sharing these photos. Can’t believe a famous actress would pose without her front veneer; the picture is hilarious!
I have been a fan since I was about 20. That was probably around the time of The China Syndrome. I was fascinated by the progression of your screen persona that apparently reflected important changes in your beliefs and life. As an unsure 20-year-old who cared about the environment and social justice, I couldn’t help but look up to you.
I Was thrilled to see you in *Grace & Frankie*. Funny, moving – important subject matter and social commentary on the way in which society tries to dismiss older women. You, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen, and Sam Waterston are all consummate actors – as is the rest of the ensemble cast. Wonderful entertainment.
Through your portrayals of complex female characters, I hope you keep making us feel and think for many years to come.
Daniel Murray
Thank you for those detailed photos and that charming anecdote. Those langoustines look so, so, so good.

With the imminent impeachment of Dilma Roussett of Brazil and the upcoming Summer Olympics I’ve been refreshing myself on Portugal as I’d forgotten how vast their empire once was, although by the time this Palace was built their empire, aside from Africa, was gone. Interesting how someone could amass such wealth from a product not apparently grown in Portugal, hence your reference to slave labor. But it does look like an exquisite national treasure. Speaking of national treasures, ONLY you could pull off sharing a picture of your veneer-less smile, once again showing us that while you are an A-List Movie Star / glamor-puss, you are also down to earth.
You made reference while filming season two of Grace and Frankie of the long hours which limited your ability to share those experiences and while I do not want to add to your stress I hope you are able to carve out a little time to share a snap or two, even if you are not able to write much. It’s fun to have your behind the scene perspective. Love ya!

Hi Jane,
Too bad Richard wasn’t with you with all those fabulous ceilings…….
Sorry, but I couldn’t resist ………..
Steven Vasko
Dear Ms. Fonda: I’m so glad you had such an interesting trip, faulty veneer and all. I just wanted you to know that I mailed off an SASE containing a photo of my latest “Barbarella” portrait painting to your Foundation’s address in Atlanta for your review and autograph. I’ll check in about a month-and-a-half to see if it’s gotten to you yet. Take care and have fun! Yours-Steven Vasko

Great Blog Jane…I am so happy you share these great moments and the funny ones like the tooth issue! Lorraine

Dear Jane! When Palácio Valle Flor, nowadays known as Pestana Palace, was build, in the beginning on the 20th century, slavery was already abolished in Portugal. So, I’m sure that no slaves were used in the construction of this building. Portugal was one of the first countries in the world abolishing the slavery in 1878…
Anyway, thanks for visiting Portugal. Is always a pleasure to have such an elegant and charming lady like you visiting our beautiful country!
Melissa Rae Wilkeson
Wow…what a beautiful country! And that palace/hotel…holy smokes! Sorry about your tooth. I loved that you shared a pic of that, too. Break a leg with Season 3 (notice I said “leg”…not “tooth”) and have a ton of fun. Looking forward to Season 2 on May 6th!
Rock on,

Lol That’s Great Jane. I love how you dealt with that, sometimes the best we can do it is laugh about ourselves , and don’t take everything so serious.By the way i’m so excited for grace and frankie season 2 I really can’t wait to see that. I bet season 2 is going to be even better , and I would like to congratulate all the cast and and especially the writers, I love so much the scrip.

Barbara kling
Dear Jane,
, First of all I want to thank you for always on your journey’s your ability to teach your blogger friends about what you see, and learn. Food is a very important part of a countries culture, and your photographs always taste good and look scrumtous.
Second, my BFF and I are thinking of going this summer to Galapogos Island. Do you think National Geographic is the way to go on our trip? Lastly, if you could go and do something differently what would you do?
I know you’re on the set working on season 3 of Grace and Frankie while everyone is just about getting ready to watch season 2. There’s no doubt there will be season 4. Stay healthy and always continue to have laughter in your life.
Warm Regards,
Hasani Gooding

One of the great gifts of aging is a keener sense of humor. A necessary component to aging gracefully. I love that you are able to laugh at yourself, and allow us to laugh along with you. #Dentalissues #Comewithaging
Cristina
You are so funny telling the story of your tooth! Something we would hide but here too you show us that the best is to make fun of it! Only smart people have sense of humor, and you certainly do! (I red somewhere that you were invited on a show in Italy and left them at the last minute for Portugal…they were quite disappointed. Maybe their vibes of disappointment made the tooth came out ? )
Teruko
Janey (and I use this with affection, not familiarity. I have always called you this!) I am a long-time fan, even still have the autographed photos of you that I sent away for as a teenager (before “Klute” came out!). I have been catching up on your blog posts and just had to comment on this one. What I have loved about you most all these years is your honesty. And only you would post a photo of yourself without your tooth. You are glamorous and beautiful yet so honest and down-to-earth. I love your spirit, your joy of living, sense of fun, and reflective nature. Keep being you!
Leighton
How was your dinner prepared?
Kimberly Nichols
What a beautiful trip! I’m so glad you had fun.
Okay. Grace and Frankie…Season 2. Oh my word! I laughed so hard…SO hard. And I was so moved (just like in Season 1) emotionally…so many times. You are just wonderful. I thank you for sharing your gifts. I LOVE YOU!!!! 🙂

Dear Jane, I have always admired you, enjoyed your films, supported your courage in telling the truth even when it was Not convenient ! I love Grace and Frankie and thank you for telling the world that yes indeed we do keep our SPIRITS as we age and become elders !!!
I want to respond to your comments about your friend Carolyn from high school with allergies to Everything. Many of us have a condition that she may have also and I hope you can alert her to this information. The diseases are MAST CELL ACTIVATION DISEASE and also MASTOCYTOSIS.
Testing and treatment is available, not a cure though. Several researchers in the USA are working on this including Dr. Lawrence Afrin, Dr. Castells, Dr. Theoharides, Dr. Akin and others. In general the meducal profession is totally oblivious. It is a difficult disease reacting to food, medication, chemicals, perfume, anything is possible and reactions can be very severe including anaphylaxis which I have experienced. I hope your friend does not have this illness and it is worth seeing someone to have it ruled out. Many of us wear Masks when out and about trying to live our lives.
My very Best to you Jane and thank you for all you have done on behalf of women, men, minorities as well as for climate and environmental issues. I hope the servicemen from the Vietnam era realize that the government caused them harm, not you. You told the Truth and I respect you for that. I imagine your ideas on communism have changed though. Every government organization is filled with people with big egos and a great desire for power, control and greed. It seems to be a human condition that I hope changes over time. Thank you for having the strength to name the problem so we can one day solve it.
Your energy level is Amazing, you are Blessed.
My Kindest Regards,
Catherine

Also, congratulations to the entire Cast of Grace and Frankie, you are all excellent actors. I imagine it is alot of fun on set.
Yes, I could not control myself and I binge watched all of Season 2 !!!!! So happy you are filming Season 3. Lots of Laughs. TY

Jane:
In Season 2 Episode 10, you wear a fabulous pink shirt with jeans. Do you know who makes that blouse, where a person can buy it? Loved it.

Hi Jane!
Just wanted to say hello, and also to share with you that I’ve recently become email-pals with Paul Ellery, director of performing arts at Nga Tawa, a girls’ boarding school in New Zealand. This week the students are presenting an all-female production of “33 Variations.” (Paul will play the piano.) They open tomorrow (May 11), and are donating the first night’s proceeds to the Motor-Neurone Association in New Zealand. If you’re moved to wish the girls good luck, I’m sure they’d be thrilled! Here’s their Facebook Page link: https://www.facebook.com/ngatawaschool/timeline?ref=page_internal
and Paul Ellery’s email is ElleryPaul@ngatawa.school.
Dick and I SO enjoy Grace and Frankie— thank you! Big hugs from us both–
Love, Diane

My 1st comment 🙂 Portugal looks pretty amazing! And so do you! I’m obsessed with Grace & Frankie! The show is everything great, all bundled into one show! It makes me laugh and cry and scream and get emotional and cheer the characters and…..the lost just goes on and on! I am not sure I’ve ever enjoyed a show this much! It’s perfection. The writing! Wow! I want to remember all those one-liners!! The icing on the cake is the cast. But you….how lucky are we to get YOU as Grace!? I’ve bought the 1st season to share and have binged the 2nd season. Obsessed….like I said. But what fun!!! I am currently listening to your book, My Life So Far via Audible. Thank you for sharing your gift 🙂 You + Lily = everything!
Noelle
Just finished binge watching Frankie and Grace. I can’t wait for 3rd season. Please hurry. I have an implant so I feel your pain. Smooches

I’m 31 years old and absolutely terrified of aging. Seeing you at 78th and how beautiful you are has given me inspiration and I’m looking forward to my future. I’m inspired by your energy and your apparent lust For life. Watching you had made me realize that aging is not terrible but a beautiful fact of life. You are an absolute inspiration. Thank you.

Greetings, Jane! Ninety-four days ago I began to navigate the community mental health system. I have been staying in a residential rehabilitation facility (Turning Point Recovery Center in Pontiac, MI — a far cry from the famous Passages of Malibu, but immensely effective in helping me to find and reclaim my authentic voice) for the past eight weeks. Prior to Turning Point, I spent some time as a patient in Oakland County, MI’s Common Ground Crisis Resource Unit, Pontiac General Hospital’s Psychiatric Unit (where I was diagnosed with a form of bipolar disorder and put on appropriately helpful medications) and a couple of publicly funded rehab facilities that, unfortunately, had deplorable conditions. In the future, I hope to become an advocate for community health reform! Currently, I am gainfully, meaningfully and happily employed as a Concierge at Sunrise Senior Living in the affluent community of Bloomfield Hills, MI. (A large company, they also have a location in Beverly Hills, CA.) Yesterday, during the Daily Chronicle activity we (our residents and the staff) acknowledged the late-great Kate Hepburn’s birthday (as well as the 81st anniversary of the very first AA meeting). Jane, I’ve always had an older soul. The music, the stars, the films and the social mores — for the most part — of my parents’ and grandparents’ generations just speak to me a little bit more than my own. I love laughing and joking with the ladies and gentlemen. I also get quite the ego-boost with all of the ladies putting on a touch extra make-up and perfume, and telling me how handsome I am. How wonderful it would be to have you come here and conduct a class on aging with beauty, dignity, elegance, grace, spirit and style! Afterwards, we could dine together at La Fonda, a charming (at least their sign is charming) little hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant in (the less affluent) Pontiac, MI! Every time I drive past their sign, I think of you — and how you continue to be such an inspiration of kindness, intelligence, inquisitiveness and talent to me — and smile.

Hi Jane, I also went on a binge watching the second season. I especially loved the first episode, because it was so laugh-out-loud hilarious. And I love to see how your character develops insights and keeps growing. It would be great to see Grace dealing with her alcoholism in the next season. A twelve step program could provide some spiritual and psychological insights, as well as much to have fun with for the writers of the show as well. Love you, and highly respect your sincerity in grappling with personal and social issues.
Bekah
Ms. Fonda,
Just wanted to let you know… It’s a GIRL!
Jim Warren
Jane: Totally off topic, so forgive me. Just started G&F 2. Please know that the hard work everyone puts into such an endeavor is so appreciated. It is such joy to watch and laugh, cry, think, and be so touched by the very real “characters” and their lives….even if in an Architectural Digest setting. This show will no doubt add years to my life from the laughter and simply “feeling”.
Steven Vasko
Dear Ms. Fonda: I was just wondering if you received my photo of my second “Barbarella” painting from your Foundation’s offices in Atlanta for you to look at and possibly autograph yet? Also, I ended up doing two more paintings about the character-one concerning the Excessive Machine scene and the other a rendering of her spaceship. When I get back my current photo from your camp, would it be okay to send you photos of these paintings (one-by-one, of course) for you to look at and possibly autograph as well? Just curious… Anyway thanks for taking the time to read this and I look forward to hearing from you in the future. Have fun! Yours-Steven Vasko

I just finished G & F season 2 and the final scenes made me literally laugh out loud. You and Lily rocked the scene and I was sad it was finished but loved every moment!!! I loved Babes character and thought she was a great addition. You love scenes with Sam Sheppard where fantastic and I was so sad with Graces situation. This programme just gets better and better. You my last also look fantastic and if i look half as good as you in my 70s doing love scenes, I will be extatic!!
Thank you sooooooo much,
A huge fan,.

Hello Ms. Fonda,
What a lovely visit you had to Lisbon! I found that area delightful. The old world feel and warm of the people made it one of my favorite travel experiences to date. They value their history and the architecture is just stunning. Looks like you enjoyed it. You have become one of my favorite actresses/people of all time. If you ever find yourself in Iowa speaking or visiting, I hope our paths cross!! And we share a birthday…so here’s to us!! ❤️
Thanks for your spirit and light!
All the best to you!
