TROY’S BIRTHDAY

Today is my son, Troy’s, birthday and we celebrated by going to my stepmom, Shirlee’s, home—Bridget Fonda came as did my friend, Richard Perry. This is the home in which Shirlee lived with my father since the mid 1960s. This is a home full of memories. When I left my first husband, I came back to this house with my 2 year old daughter, Vanessa, to live in the servants quarters and that’s where I was for almost a year. That’s where I lived while I was morphing into an activist. It was from here that I ventured out on my various treks across the country in the early 1970s to have my mind blown by the tumult on campuses and military bases. I was arrested four times for passing out copies of the Uniform Code of Military Justice to soldiers on military bases and spoke before crowds of 10s of 1000s from Denver to D.C. I would come back to the home of my father to lick my wounds and regroup.

Sitting peacefully on the patio yesterday overlooking the pool where my children played as youngsters with my now-grown son and his wife and my father’s loving widow and her new partner, filled me with happiness. There was a lot of reminiscing and laughter.

I walked too much when I visited Bridget’s home in Santa Barbara over the 4th weekend and I have been paying for it ever since. Will I ever learn not to overdo? I have 2 hours of therapy and rehab every day for the next week and hopefully that will help.

Here are some random answers to blog questioners: The John Gardner quote came from a commencement speech he made a long time ago but I don’t have the date or place. I have long collected quotes that touch me but am not always diligent about citing the time and place.

To Hilary Basing with the right knee problem: If you have persistent pain in your right knee I would see a sports medcine doctor and probably get an x-ray to see the condition of your cartilage. When you say you take Glucosamine I hope that in with Contortion. THORNE company makes the best combo product which you can get at Whole foods or online. You should stop all movements that have impact. Standing lunges work. Low impact aerobics work. There’s a lot you can do aerobically without impacting your knee.

That’s all for now. See you next time.

  1. I saw a picture of you with Michael Jackson in one of the many magazines about him that are in almost every store now. You were giving him an award. I think it was taken in the 1990’s! If I find it again, I’ll tell you exactly what was written by the picture! So glad you’re enjoying spending some time with your special friend now! I’m sure this has improved your recovery!!

  2. Anna Crouse is out of ICU. In fact, she’s home again and stabilizing. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.

    Love and Peace

  3. I found the magazine about Michael Jackson that has your picture with him. It’s titled “A Tribute To…..The King Of Pop.” Michael is wearing a white suit and shirt on the cover. It says by the picture,” Jane Fonda giving Michael a Platinum Award for the Thriller album 1983.” You might have a copy of this picture. It might have been a trivial thing to tell you about seeing this, but I thought you might want to see the magazine, if you don’t have a copy of this picture of you and Michael!

  4. Wow I wish i were as courageous as you have been through life. You’re such a strong woman, have you written any books?..

It must be wonderful to remember all the great things you have done, the many risks you took and now you can sit and watch your family enjoy little moments in life..

    Hope you do read this.
    🙂

  5. Hi Jane, I know your book has been out for quite some time but have just got my hands on it and cannot put it down. To touch dry ice can freeze the finger but be excrutiantingly painful. My soul has been on dry ice but the pain stayed put and didnt go anywhere. There are passages in your book that have touched trigger spots and in my mind I see these spots thawing out – no bigger than a match head – and the pain screaming to get out of these tiny tiny melt downs. Your book is moving, intelligent, concise, and so easy to read. I will finish it, re read it and contact you again. You are brave and at this point in time, I am in act 2. I will move out of it into act 3 and with your help, beitso in a book, I will stretch out act 3 to the max. Thank you Jane and kindest regards. Kate

  6. Jane, Re: my recent update about Anna Crouse. I meant to say that I was sorry I didn’t “let you know about her condition” sooner. After my request to you on her behalf, at what seemed to calculate to the speed of light, Lindsay told me she was on her way home and looking forward to Sardi’s.

    With love and peace

  7. Hi Jane, okay, first Robert Redford goes and gets married at 72… and now you vanish off your website. You folks are having too much fun in your third acts, which is absolutely wonderful and inspiring.

We miss you here. Throw us a crumb once in awhile. PS– I saw a Garry Marshall director’s special and he praised you as the ultimate pro on his set. Hope you make more movies.

    Peace & Love to you.

  8. Hi !!
We have met like 6 times, but in big crowds. When are you coming to New Mexico. I am your biggest admirer, don’t believe anyone else. I would love to meet you in Rowe for a Starbucks and just even one minute of conversation. whadya think? Don’t fall in love yet K.

  9. Greetings and Salutations to you Jane. I am so glad I found your blog and plan on reading all the old entries. I have enjoyed most of your on screen work and plan to purchase your book. I’ve always admired your dramatic genius, but I have to admit I absolutely adore your comedic ventures….Monster In Law is a personal fave! I only 49 but disabled and in pain 24/7 so please accept my deepest sympathy on your pain from walking too much. I have enjoyed my time here and will be back. Have fun and don’t forget to relax.

Blessings to you, Pami Jane xoxox

  11. Did Bridget and her husband introduce you to Richard Perry?

  12. Hi, Maybe I was hallucinating but I think I just passed you in West Hollywood (listening intently to someone, holding the leash to a white pooch?) If so, you looked amazing and seeing made my heart skip. You – or, your doppleganger – reminded me how much I admire your work and how, even on multiple viewings, your films have nourished my own work. I wish I was more bold to have said it in person but I’m not so I’ll write it here, Thank you

  13. You are an inspiration to us all. Hope I will be able to do as well as you. The day we stop learning and being active, that’s the end.

  14. Dear Jane,

Even though i have not added comments before, i have been reading your blog since day one. I have followed your career all my life. I see that your last blog was on July 8 , I must say i am terribly concerned about you, i have this feeling that something is wrong , Perhaps something gone wrong with your knee ? I know you said something about walking too much. Anyways, just let us know that you are OK!

  15. I visited with a native Vietcon in Flordi last week, he still has family there and says it is bad for them as a communist country, his family is very poor, dad and mom still alive. As he did not speak English very well I did not understand everything, but Jane Fonda’s name did pass his lips. Jane should go back now and not visit dignatarys, but visit the regualar people that the US was not able to set free. Maybe donote some money to them for FOOD. Maybe that would make up for some of the soldiers who may have died because of Fonda.

  16. I am getting caught up on your posts as I did not know you had a blog until tonight. Forgive me if I write you too often. I just wanted to say I am glad you still have a step-mom and roots (her home)that she shared with your dad. It is good to be able to go back to familiar surroundings and relax. My grandmother died at age 95 about 4 years ago and she was a stability, having been in her home about 60 years! I am interested in your comments about knees as I fell on mine in Oct. of 07 on a sidewalk at a school I was teaching at. Workers comp deals are always fun because lots of game playing goes on, especially by insurance companies. An x-ray was taken initially, with no breaks. However, a year later, still dealing with a swollen knee that pops and is painful, a back that has pain in the upper and lower, and a right hand that had a faulty surgery and a major nerve was severed! Thank goodness I have an attorney helping me with my issues but it does drag on! I have not been able to work for a year and a half. At my insistance, an MRI was done a YEAR after the fall. They found a torn meniscus, cartilage under my knee. That was in about Feb. the MRI was done. Now here it is Aug. and nothing has been repaired. My dr. said it needs surgery probably but getting approvals from the insurance company is so slow. I take Neurontin three times a day and have Vicadin and Percocets if it gets really bad. I hate taking pills of any kind and have used Whole Foods for natural things. Zyflamend and a 14 herbal salve for two things. I wear a knee brace I bought myself as well and hope I don’t end up on crutches, waiting for something to get done. Since I am not teaching I do not have insurance or funds to take care of it myself. I am stuck waiting on workers comp and hoping it does not get worse. What do you think? Have you heard whether or not such can be the case? Also about death…. I don’t fear it but do not welcome it either. I fear getting Alzheimers or dementia, and not being able to communicate with loved ones as I would like to. I wish I were more disciplined with regards to exercising and losing weight. I admire you because you have always taken ballet classes where ever you are at, or so I have read. I remember my daughter first started exercising with video’s I had of your workouts. She is a size 4, by the way, age 33, and still quite disciplined. I join the gyms, buy the videos, but rarely go or do the videos. I bought an expensive treadmill, but it is in a storage unit at the moment. HELP! Any advice? Ok…this has turned into a novel. Hope you get this one… thanks! Diane
