LILY & JANE2 DO SUNDANCE

Posted on February 2, 2015, in My Blog, with 16 Comments

We left Los Angeles Sunday January 25th for Park City and the 15th annual Sundance Film Festival. Hard as it is to believe, Lily had never been and I had never gone not to work but just to see films. It happened like this: Our friend, Pat Mitchell, who among her many titles became Chair of the Board of the Sundance Institute this year, invited Lily and me to be interviewed by her for the Women In Film brunch Monday morning.…

AND IT’S A WRAP ON “GRACE & FRANKIE”!

Posted on November 26, 2014, in My Blog, with 16 Comments

We finished shooting at 2am last Saturday morning. Whew! It’s very nice to be able to sleep in and not have to learn pages of dialogue every day. It’s also bittersweet because I already miss my “Grace & Frankie” family, especially Lily. Towards the end of shooting on Saturday–like at midnight–she and I got onto a laughing jag that we couldn’t stop.…

HAVING FUN ON “GRACE & FRANKIE”

Posted on September 3, 2014, in My Blog, with 19 Comments

Okay, it’s starting to get real fun on this new Netflix series I’m shooting with Lily Tomlin (Don’t know when it will air–sometime after the thirteen episodes of the first season are finished –and you can start binge watching!). But I want to apologize to my blog readers because I haven’t been writing much. That’s because we shoot such long hours and there isn’t any time and what little leftover time there is, is spent (by me, at least) watching the dailies which takes hours but which is critical for me–that’s how I learn what works, what doesn’t, what I need to do more of or less of and that’s where I get a true sense of what the director is going for.…

STARTING THE NEW SERIES, “GRACE & FRANKIE,” WITH LILY TOMLIN, MARTIN SHEEN & SAM WATERSTON

Posted on August 17, 2014, in My Blog, with 31 Comments

I was very excited when Martin Sheen was cast as my husband and Sam Waterston as Lily’s. It feels good to have my pal from “The Newsroom” with us on this new adventure. Most of my Newsroom scenes were with him and I grew to care for him a lot. I’ve never worked with Martin before but we’ve met on several occasions and we share values and concerns…actually, all four of us do.…

SNAPSHOTS FROM MY AFI AWARD EVENING

Posted on June 12, 2014, in My Blog, with 61 Comments

In the ’70s, I’d presented one to Bette Davis at her request and to Barbara Stanwyck. My father had received one. But I never imagined I would be given one. It is a great honor for one’s body of work over a lifetime. So when I received a call to inform me I was getting one, I burst into tears. There’s been a lot of press around it so I will simply post a lot of photos that you may not have seen.…

TWO INTERESTING WEEKS AWAY FROM HOME (INCLUDING PARIS)

First I went to Atlanta for the annual Empower party that raises money for my Georgia-based non-profit, The Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power & Potential. We honored Dr Sanjay Gupta with the Health Pioneer. It was a lot of fun and a big success. My favorite ex-husband, Ted Turner, was my date.

Turns out Dr Gupta went to University of Michigan and, with his wife Rebecca, lived near Jeff Daniels in a small lake town 15 minutes from Ann Arbor.…

MY HAND AND FOOT PRINTS ON HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME

Posted on May 1, 2013, in My Blog, with 41 Comments

Saturday was one of my happiest days—for many reasons. As I said at the ceremony, “I thought Hollywood wouldn’t give me this opportunity until the city poured a new sidewalk in front of my home!” I’ve been in this business for 55 years and I figured it just wasn’t going to happen. But then, to my surprise and joy, along came Turner Classic Movies and they honored me with this ceremony.…

The LA Press Club

Posted on November 21, 2012, in My Blog, with 9 Comments

Last Sunday I received the first ever Visionary Award For Improving the Lives of Others from the Los Angeles Press Club. It was a big honor I felt, and a moving experience. Robert Redford flew into town especially to present the award to me and his words were so beautiful and generous. (He looked pretty beautiful, too).

Lily Tomlin sat at my table along with Melanie Griffith and friend Kathy Griffin who presented the Luminary Award to Hollywood Reporter publisher Janice Min.…

PRIME TIME BOOK TOUR…WEST COAST EDITION

Posted on August 25, 2011, in My Blog, with 9 Comments

Flew to L.A. From D.C. Where I did The Diane Rehm Show and started the next day with a line up of phone interviews. Then Valerie Bertinelli came over and interviewed me for the AARP TV show called, My Generation, which airs on PBS. That was fun. We hadn’t seen each other in ages and it was like having a catch up conversation with an old friend.…
