In the ’70s, I’d presented one to Bette Davis at her request and to Barbara Stanwyck. My father had received one. But I never imagined I would be given one. It is a great honor for one’s body of work over a lifetime. So when I received a call to inform me I was getting one, I burst into tears. There’s been a lot of press around it so I will simply post a lot of photos that you may not have seen. The program will be televised June 14th, this Saturday night, on TNT at 9PM and then an encore at 10:30PM.

Congratulations! You definitely deserve this great award! You have a fantastic lifetime of work, with so much more to come. Wonderful pictures with an amazing group of people. I understand you didn’t know who the speakers were, but were you able to help make the guest list? Oh, and I am curious, do you have a special place for all of these awards you receive?

Thank you so much for sharing these photos! A well deserved award. Congratulations, Jane! Now…I must set my DVR. 🙂

Dear Ms. Fonda,
This is my first time posting on your wonderful blog. I just had to write and warmly congratulate you on your well deserved AFI Award. You look absolutely beautiful in your photos. I will definitely be watching the telecast on June 14th.
Also, if I may, i’d like to comment on your earlier blog regarding the amazing Russell Crowe. You are both my favorite actors and I simply can’t wait to see you perform together in “Fathers & Daughters”. You are both such versatile actors. I have been a fan of Russell’s since 1999 when he was in L.A. Confidential. Ms. Fonda, did you know that Russell is also a wonderful singer/songwriter/musician? He has a beautiful voice. I saw him perform with his band TOFOG at Stubbs in Austin, Texas and at a House of Blues venue. Not only is he multi-talented… he is a sincerely nice person. He was warm, soft spoken, and very sweet when I spoke with him before the shows. I hope you both do many more films together.
Warmest Congratulations, again, on your AFI Award. I wish you much happiness always.

What an amazing award for outstanding accomplishments. You are so worthy. I have a friend who has done many good things in her life but yet she feels deep inside that she has accomplished so little… just not true. And I can’t convince her; it is her task. Do you ever trip over doubt on all the fine accomplishments you have presented both to the public and private life? What advice can you give to my 65 year old friend who compares her accomplishments as less to those of others? On a fun note: I love Wanda Sykes! I love laughter.
Catherine Breheny
Congrats, Jane! You are truly an inspiration and one beautiful dame!!

Dear Ms. Fonda,
I was very privileged to be able to work this event as a member of the AFI staff for the evening. I just have to tell you how much the evening and your work and contributions to the world touched me — Before attending this event, I was unaware of the extraordinary breadth of causes you’ve advocated for, your commitment to such causes, and the fierce passion with which you’ve always pursued what you believed in (I only had a cursory knowledge). As an aspiring producer/director/actress, I must tell you how profoundly touched and inspired I was by this evening, what your colleagues shared, and the amazing human being you are that AFI was celebrating. Thank you for being an incredible role model to young women in the industry — as someone who is a committed feminist and passionately vocal about women’s representation in media both on and offscreen, I am bowled over by the pioneering and phenomenal work you have done. Thank you, thank you, thank you for being such an inspiration, fighting for what you believe in, and paving the way for women after you. It is rare that you can encounter someone who has the power to inspire you so deeply — I was so privileged to be a part of the evening. Congratulations and thank you for all that you’ve done for women in Hollywood from the bottom of my heart. I only hope that someday I can have a quarter of the ability to empower and push for change in my chosen field as you have. Much love, Maureen

Congratulations on the award, Jane! It was very much deserved. Thanks for posting and sharing these photos. Looks like it was a fun and memorable evening. You looked gorgeous (you always do), I love the dress! Congratulations again! You are an inspiration to me and many others.

I was wondering where Mary Williams and Nathalie Vadim were? I didn’t see pics of them at this event. Also, you call your son Troy, the love of your life-well, isn’t your daughter Vanessa as well?

Watching your AFI Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony tonight, I was struck by how much you and your films defined my perception of women while I was growing up. From “Klute” to “Julia” and “The China Syndrome”, not to mention so many others, you epitomized for me that sexy, radiant, laser-beam generosity of spirit and intelligence so many women possess. I had the honor of meeting you briefly when you visited San Francisco on tour for your autobiography, standing in line for over an hour to get my copy of your book signed. When I approached you and said, very haltingly, “I’ve always loved your work,” you smiled with that twinkle in your eyes and replied, “I love it when men tell me that, because it means I made a difference. You will read my book?” I assured you I would – and I did. I still have it, in fact. Legends don’t get much better than you. You’ve never been more beautiful or more committed to the causes you support. As a gay man and writer, I thank you for your tireless support against discrimination, our right to marry those we love, and your ongoing commitment to equality everywhere. Congratulations, Ms. Fonda! May you continue to surprise and inspire us for many more years.

Hi Jane,
What a beautiful TRIBUTE from your loving friends and colleagues. It touched my heart, It made me laugh, it made me cry (when you talked about your dad/On Golden Pond. My dad did not show much emotion either. There was so much love and admiration for you that you could feel it. You
have touched and inspired so many people through your books, movies,
DVD’s, different programs and by example. You have already touched my
life through your books. You have given me a new outlook on aging, I am
excited, happy, and looking forward to my third act. Thank you for all you do. What did it feel like listening to your peers ? Do you ever get nervous having to talk or walking up to the stage to get your award?
Becky King
Dear Ms. Fonda-I happened upon your AFI tribute last night on TNT. I was so in awe of all you have done not only as an actress but especially as an activist. I look at people such as yourself who have had such meaningful lives and I begin to realize how little I have accomplished in my own. I need to get up off my butt and get more involved in life but truthfully I am struggling with the concept. I don’t know where or how to begin. I have spent my life trying to please others and consequently I have forgotten who I really am. The thought of venturing beyond my comfort zones is a bit frightening. Seeing your tribute last night really made me think ! I need to get moving! At 61 years old it is time I stopped focusing so much on being a pleaser and started looking at how I can live a more meaningful and productive life. Thank you so much for just being who you are and for giving me a little “push”. BTW-You looked so healthy and beautiful last night and your love for your family was so heartwarming. Best Wishes and love- Beck

Dear Miss Fonda,
I want to first congratulate you for your successful AFI award! It is an honor you will cherish each and every day, however, it is merely a symbol of your significance to this world. I marvel at the wonderful courage you have and at all the experiences that have created the person you are today. A person full of love, strength, and timeless wisdom. You have worked for everything in your life and have turned into one of the most honorable people in history. Do not ever doubt your self-worth. You have inspired me and many other women to be strong and to have a voice in this world. You have unknowingly given me many gifts- a flaming passion for social-political issues, a fashionable inspiration, a valued divinity and inner peace. You, Jane, are special. You are set apart from the rest of the celebrities in Los Angeles. Know that you are adored by many, myself included. Thank you for helping me mold into the person I am striving to be.

Hi Jane,
I really enjoyed watching the award presentation the other night. You are very blessed to have so many wonderful people in your life. I think of all of the speeches, I enjoyed your son’s the most. I know he’s an actor but I’ve never seen any of his work. Can you pass along some names of movies, etc. that he’s done? I’d love to check them out. And your daughter Vanessa, I read somewhere that she was a documentary filmmaker…Yes? Likewise, I would love to see some of her work. I also enjoyed Meryl Streep’s speech. The funny thing is I had re-watched “Julia” about a week ago having not seen it in years and I knew that was her first movie and have always envied her being able to work with you on her first film. I loved your comment after you received your award the other night when you said only one person had ever asked you for film making advice and then you pointed at her. I think she is wonderful and seems so genuine and fun to be around. Anyway, congratulations, again, on your award. Rock on!
Mel

Dear Ms. Fonda,
The AFI Tribute to you was so lovely and emotional. I loved Meryl Streep’s comment about your generous heart and kindness. Your commentary regarding your father and that scene in On Golden Pond brought tears to my eyes.
You looked absolutely stunning-what is your secret for staying so young? I remember taking a Jane Fonda Workout class in San Francisco where you actually taught the class-it was so much fun!
My favorite films of yours-Barefoot in the Park (I could watch that movie a million times), Klute, Coming Home…goodness, when I think about it…ALL your films are my favorites : ) I was wondering, is Robert Redford as charming as he appears?
Warmest Congratulations on your award. You are a remarkable actress…and our admiration for you also includes a deep respect for you as a remarkable woman…who stands up for her beliefs and fights for human rights and peace.
Sunshine and Smiles,
Mary Ann
Mad Mad Trip
Congrats on this award, Ms. Fonda! My kids and I happened to be in LA last summer as you were doing your prints at the TCL Chinese Theater. We got an up-close glimpse of your practice concrete casts and were told that you are the first to depict a peace sign. That’s great!
The visit was part of a world record road trip we made – 7,000 miles in 17 days and detailed in our book, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Trip: On the Road of the Longest Two-Week Family Road Trip in History [Raleigh, N.C.: Lulu Press, 2014].

Hi, Jane!
Love this post, as always, I am huge fan of your blog and I just finished reading your book “My Life So Far”, which I found incredibly fascinating, I really did. Especially one bit, of course there were lots of gems in the book, but I remember one part especially of the book where you described your brother, Peter, growing up, how you described his battle against becoming an adult and a man. How he felt like not sticking to the norm and being free of the chains of some sort of adulthood and manhood, because I feel like that is so relatable, having to grow up and leave that childhood behind and how bittersweet, sad and hard that is, because you feel like you don’t know yourself anymore… Anyways, loved the book!

So beautiful Jane today and always. I love your dress … watched Barefoot in the Park last week, one of my favorites! Congratulations ! You certainly are looking happy and have a beautiful family!

Thank you for your life!

I was greatly thrilled to see you received the AFI Award, long overdue in my estimation. There are not a lot of female actors who have received this award so it was heartening to see one of the greatest living actresses included!
Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck, Shirley MacLaine, Meryl Streep and Barbra Streisand are all past recipients. Have you ever had the opportunity or offer to work with any of these actresses who are currently living?
Victoria Mish
Jane you are as stunning as ever! You are one of my favorites and I was thrilled to watch you receive such an incredible honor. I’m most certain your dad is proud-what an outstanding legacy you ,your brother and father have contributed to the magical world of film.Bravo
