IN TORONTO

Traveled today for the first time in 4 months and it felt weird. The airport seemed foreign. I even forgot you can only bring 10oz liquid bottles or they take them away. Oops. But I like Canada a lot and Toronto is a terrific city. I have made a number of films here and, as exercise while filming, I would ride a bike for hours on the miles of gorgeous bike trails that take you through parks and along rivers. The city has great restaurants, too, but I won’t be able to try any. I’m here to make a speech for which I am paid. I will talk about my life and what it has taught me and how my non-profit work grows out of what I have seen and experienced. I don’t view the work my organizations do as “charity” but rather as instruments of social change. Next week, on my day off, I will do the same thing in Montreal.

While I am here, Michael Rudd (you saw his photo in the Broadway Cares skit holding Tulea) is keeping Tulea which is reassuring to me.

See you next time.

  1. Hi Jane
I’m sure you had a wonderful day in Toronto as,yes,it is a terrific city.Which films did you make there? It is a great place to raise a family and,in fact,my niece Nicole, who lives there is due to have her first child in 3 weeks.
I look forward to reading more about your day there and the audience reaction.

  2. Dear Jane,
It’s so inspiring to see that you, as one celebrity, are doing so much good in the world with your celebrity-status position. Celebrities have so much clout because they are admired from their work and are so recognized all over the world. May God bless you for all you are able to do for humanity, which certainly does need help. Thank you for sharing yourself with us and letting us into your magical world. Movie stars are usually on such a pedestal that the rest of the world can’t relate to their charmed lives. But you’ve decided to “connect” with your fans and we thank you for that. You are such a great example of being active in your 70’s.

  3. Tulea really does look genuinely sad.

  4. Awe, how cute she is! You should come to RI and make a speach. Haha. Enjoy Canada!!

  5. COME TO WINDSOR JUST 3 hours away from TORONTO come and come to LA SCALA BRIGANTINO it has some amazing italian food. harison ford ate here at BRIGANTINOS
JANE IT WOULD BE AMAZING IF YOU COULD DO THAT AND BE A WONDERFUL MOTHERS DAY for my MOM.

happy early mothers day to you too.

  6. I have never felt good about giving to “charity” either, as you become set apart/above from the recipient, and sometimes it creates a dependency. It is much better to educate people, and so education should be embedded in all forms of social action/charity, like teaching someone to grow vegetables, or eat them even. Charity is too moralistic a concept often, as in faith, hope, and charity. However, I think in a broader sense, we should all be charitable to others, not criticizing others that is, providing more leeway. So being charitable should be a kind of love, as long as we are not moralistic about it, or looking down on someone. Usually, the most charitable thing to do is to talk to someone, with compassionate listening, being nonjudgmental. Perhaps being charitable is the underlying basis for trying to change society, to make it more charitable as well.

  7. Awww, Tulea is so precious. That little face. I don’t think I’d ever be able to say “no” to her.

Enjoy your trip to Canada. Sorry you can’t truly enjoy your day off, but hopefully you’ll get some rest before tomorrow’s show.

    Best,
    Amanda

  8. I’d love to go to Canada one day. I have met lots of Canadians over the years and they connect with us Aussies very well. It looks like a beautiful country. So, Michael must be pretty cool for you to trust your beloved Tulea with! Do you take Multivitamins or what! How do you keep your energy up!

  9. Hi, Jane,
After reading your blog today about being on the road and missing your Tulea, I thought you might enjoy this short homage to our furry companions.
    Bright blessings,
    Susan

From time to time, people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a dog,” or, “that’s a lot of money for just a dog.” They don’t understand the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for “just a dog.” Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just a dog.” Many hours have passed and my only company was “just a dog” but I did not once feel slighted. Some
of my saddest moments have been brought about by “just a dog” and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “just a dog” gave me comfort and
    reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it’s “just a dog” then you will probably understand phases like “just a friend,” “just a sunrise,” orr “just a promise.” “Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy. “Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person. Because of “just a dog” I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future. So for me and folks like me, it’s
not “just a dog” but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment. “Just a dog” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it’s not “just a dog” but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “just a man.” So the next time you hear the phrase “just a dog” just smile, because they “just don’t understand.”

  10. Can you come to Nova Scotia???

  11. Jane,

    Bon, sea you lather, Cyril.

  12. She certainly looks like she is missing you. You can see it in her face, in her posture.

  13. Congratulations on your Tony Nomination!

  14. Thank goodness for the Michael Rudds of the world! They make a life of travel entirely possible. We couldn’t do it without them.

  15. This has nothing to do with what you posted. I’ve been following your blog for a while. Just saw that you were nominated for a Tony…Congratulations!

  16. Your sounding very interesting Jane, so right you are,
I understand what your saying it seem to be in DEVELOP POWER AND PERSONALITY , the Self . I feel the same way, moved into change my information that is my area of specialty, my college level teaching credential is “communication services and related technology” ,but my degrees are in Fine Art and Eduction. Art is the expression of the self a definition I use in my courses. The self and media. around us is how the communication of information is exchanged, But people see who makes the most noise is making the most communication , not so. The use of a set of controls in our life as SELF sets the level of input for change. We change others when we change it is a growth. After earning my degree in Child Development I knew that a degree in Art and Educational Technology would lead to a understanding of information and communication.

This may sound silly, but do you call Tulea when your traveling? I do for my Angel, my voice seems to comfort and assure her of my return. Just like our children in many ways.

  33. Dear Jane:

You may not remember me, but we met at the Interim Place event on Monday evening. I just wanted to say that you promised inspiration and did not disappoint us!

Thank you so much for your warm presence and motivational words. I am soon entering my own “third act” and your account of wanting to make your “third act” mean something was everything I could have hoped for.

We are so looking forward to receiving your documentary and will watch it together. All of us enjoyed your kind attention and your candid comments.

If you are ever in the neighbourhood, I know all of us would be flattered to give you a tour of our humble “home”.

    Thanks again,
    Emily

  34. Dear Ms. Fonda:

If you’re up here again in the future, please consider stopping by the ALS Society of Canada or having a coffee/lunch with us.

We’d love to tell you about all the great work we’re doing in cooperation with our American counterparts. We recently hosted the premiere of Tuesdays with Morrie, starring Hal Linden and are enormously grateful for the awareness and recognition that people like you and Mr. Linden bring to ALS and our efforts to fight this disease.

    Best regards,
Laurie Pringle & the ALS Canada team.
