COOKING BEFORE NEW YORK

I wanted to cook a romantic dinner before my trip to New York where I will be receiving the Shape Magazine Fitness Icon Award at their 30th Anniversary event. Dr Oz is presenting the award to me. I’m excited…a big fan of his. Ah yes, back to my point….I cooked Chicken Curry and served it over with Brown rice with a side of Brussel Sprouts.

  1. Looks absolutely yummy- and what fun Richard is…. I love him for you and you for he!

I also want to thank you, Jane, for mentioning in Prime Time that after you and Ted split you raked leaves at your daughter’s house in Atlanta. I just left what for me was a long-term relationship(7 yrs- ha- there is that 7 year cycle you write about)and moved from Idaho (tho I am a native NYer) to…Atlanta of all places!

So here I am, 47 years old (today!) with a great new job and a cute little house in Marietta but feeling totally sort of lost and spacey and like I am floating 3 feet off the ground at all times and for the life of me can’t figure out how to land. As soon as I read the bit about raking I ran out and got a rake and got going. It was the very best thing I could do- the sunshine- the great smells- the exercise- and me grounding with the glorious earth. And I was musing while raking “Did Jane— when she shared that little tidbit— ever suspect that it would so be taken to heart?” I just adore you, you wise woman! The book rocks and you rock and that curry absolutely rocks! xo

    • How good to hear, Lyn, that my leaf-raking ‘tidbit’ did you good. Yes, when ever I am befuddled I get into manual labor–the harder the better.

  2. Jane, you’re a kindred spirit….I just finished Prime Time and wanted to thank you for such an inspiring read. I’m 55, so a little behind you on the path, but I recognized much of what you wrote about. Your sensibility, and the way you matured and evolved into your Third Act, resonated with me deeply. I love the staircase concept…it’s a more profound and enlightened way to live and interpret our lives. I especially loved the latter parts of the book, The Work In and Full Tilt to the End, and I was very moved by the passage you shared from Millicent Rogers’ letter to her son. I do think that the deepening of our spirituality is one of the great gifts of age. As I approach my own third act I feel I am truly and fully coming into my own. I have so much I want to do, and I want to appreciate every moment even as I look ahead. Your book was a great affirmation for me. There are challenges and losses as we age; but there are many gifts too. I’ve also seen a couple of your interviews, and you really emanate the glow of a woman in full bloom who knows who she is. Thanks for sharing your journey and mining the territory ahead….you are an inspiration.

    • Thanks, Carey. Yes, my favorite chapter in Prime Time is “The Work In.”

  3. Wow, this looks really yummie! 😀 Congratulations on that award! You more than deserve it. I mean Fitness Icon = Jane Fonda. Simple truth. 😀

I so love You for your kind words about my review. I still can’t believe it and you can’t imagine how happy I was. You’re so wonderful. 🙂 Well, I already knew that but it’s wonderful to be confirmed in your beliefs. 😀

  4. Oh God, Brussel Sprouts. Love ’em. In season at the moment here in Hamburg, Germany. Just got back from a holiday in Crete, Greece. Haven’t eaten so many vegetables in my life, plus litres of olive oil. The Cretians have the lowest level of cancer and heart problems in the world due to the high level of veggies, fruits (biggest consumers in Europe) and olive oil (34 litres per person per year!). If you want to talk about the relationship between food and health then Google ‘Crete’. Fascinating. We tried to work out how many litres of olive oil we eat at home. I think 10 litres per person per year.

Anyway, have fun in New York.
    Best wishes from Hamburg.
    Jason

  5. very familiar…is this the same chicken curry recipe you posted a while back? i cook it regular now days since trying it….excellent

  6. Enjoy!! Your dinner and your trip to NY. I wonder if you will visit Occupy Wall Street while you are there?

    • Nancy, I will not be visiting the Occupy folks although my heart is with them. I do not think it would help their growing movement given how the media is casting all visits by celebrities.

  7. Hello Jane,

Well you cooked that wonderfull looking Chicken Curry with loving hands. I enjoying cooking myself, have found a nice free ebook cookbook, that has come insight on more that food. Subject: Cookery, Indic.–Food habits Women–India–Social conditions. You may find of interest. http://www.archive.org/details/betweencoursesst00kimb

  8. Congratulations on your award! Well deserved!
The curry chicken looks delicious! I really need to learn how to cook . . . . and grocery shop. 7-11 shopping is just not cutting it anymore.
I wonder if you were always a good cook or did the talent surface later in life.

    • Susan, it comes and goes. I am into it now. Watch the cooking channel when I work out!

  9. Hi Jane,
I am a member of an exercise group who have been together over 35 years. Needless to say, we have used your videos and now are using your new dvd’s and have preordered the last one on Amazon.com. You are in the same age range as a lot of us. We have met 3 times a week for these many years in various locations in our small town and currently are in a classroom of the Old Red School that we are helping to restore. It currently is home for the community library, the county Health Dept, and the Museum. We still use your videos and have recorded the audio for use in the gym where we have no access to a television and vcr. We have had fun occasionally dressing like you and your exercise class. As we have aged, we have done a lot more walking after warming up with a video and find that your new videos are more suited to our age, but still use the old ones as well.
We have often remarked when you and Ted were together and coming to Montana that it would be so fun to have you come in and lead our group in person! We have such a good time together not only exercising, but socializing too. Coffee after exercise, birthday celebrations, and even dinners with our husbands joining in.
Thanks for all your great videos and the encouragement you give us to keep on going, even with the aches and pains that come with aging.
