SUZANNE BRAUN LEVINE’S “HOW WE LOVE NOW”

Posted on September 4, 2012, in My Blog, with 5 Comments

Over the Labor Day weekend I read my friend, Suzanne Braun Levine’s, new book about women, love, intimacy and sex in what she calls our Second Adulthood. I enjoyed it and benefitted from it. I wrote about some of this in “Prime Time” but seeing these issues through Levine’s wise eyes were just what I needed—right now. She makes the essential point that “we are not who we were, only older.” We change with ripeness and in many beautiful, profound ways, like athletes who, at a later time in life, try a new sport and discover new muscles they didn’t know they had.…

NANCY REAGAN

Posted on August 26, 2012, in My Blog, with 12 Comments

Tomorrow I fly to New Orleans to film my role as Nancy Reagan in the Lee Daniels film, “The Butler.” Forest Whitaker plays the butler (true story) and Oprah plays his wife. I will have scenes with both of them and with Alan Rickman who plays Ronald Reagan…I’ve gotten used to thinking of him now as Ronnie, which is what Ms Reagan calls him.…

VERONIQUE PECK

Posted on August 20, 2012, in My Blog, with 3 Comments

Veronique was Gregory Peck’s wife. He met her when she, a French reporter, interviewed him in Paris. When he spoke about her it was clear that she was the shining center of his life and, for those who knew her, it was easy to understand why. Friday, her daughter Cecile, sent out an email to friends telling us that Veronique had just died.…

MOVING INTO A NEW HOUSE WHILE WATCHING THE OLYMPICS

Posted on August 5, 2012, in My Blog, with 4 Comments

This is no mean feat: moving is inevitably stressful and time consuming. But my honey and I are also glued to the Olympics so we steal slivers of time and, of course, all the nighttime coverage.

As someone who has always been involved with fitness and fascinated by physical prowess and that special drive in some people to push themselves to excel, this has been a jaw-dropping time.…

ALEXANDER PAYNE, LAURA DERN & AN AMAZING WEEKEND IN OMAHA

Posted on July 24, 2012, in My Blog, with 13 Comments

The great director Alexander Payne (“Descendants,” “Sideways,” “All About Schmidt,” “Citizen Ruth”…) invited me to come to Omaha, where he lives and grew up and often makes his movies, to participate in an evening to raise money for Film Streams, Omaha’s non-profit cinema institution. The event would consist, he said, of a dialogue between us about film and acting, held on stage at the Holland Performing Arts Center.…

A KATY PERRY NIGHT

Posted on July 16, 2012, in My Blog, with 1 Comment

In Atlanta for a few days for business. Invited friends to go with me to Katy Perry’s “Part of Me.” I am a fan but my friends didn’t know her and never would have gone had I not insisted.
All of them, even art historian, Bill Arnett, who’s just a smidge younger than me and someone you’d never think of as a Katy Perry sort of person, thanked me afterwards.…

A V-DAY WEEKEND: WHEN WOMEN HAVE YOUR BACK

Posted on June 30, 2012, in My Blog, with 12 Comments

I flew up to Berkeley Saturday knowing it would be an intense, inspiring, emotional weekend and I wasn’t disappointed. Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues” (among many other pieces) and life-long activist, has gathered a board of directors that is off the charts in generosity, fierceness and fun.

Washington, Salma Hayek, Jennifer Buffett, Thandie Newton, and Cari Ross.
We were not only In Berkeley for a board meeting, but on Sunday, we were going to see Eve’s new play, “Emotional Creature.” More about this in a moment.…
