It would be interesting to read more of your thoughts on this topic following Sara Davidson's recent account of her experiences on the Code Pink Afghanistan trip. She gives quite a different view of what's really going on to the one you received from Jodie.

Interesting article in Canadian magazine 'The Walrus' about Afghanistan - I read it at my cousin's, can't remember the date on it. But the tenor of the article was that the 'reconstruction' of Afghanistan is making things worse, not better. Bringing in Western contractors using Western construction materials alienates people, whereas a few pilot projects using local labour and local materials can transform an area, give people a sense of ownership, economic and social benefits.
Of course we should get out of Afghanistan, and every where else - when are we going to learn from the ever-lengthening trail of destruction and disintegration that the policy of invading other countries because we disagree with their viewpoint never worked and will never work? It only serves to bolster up the finances of the military/industrial complex. What is good for them is *not* good for anyone else - nor for this lovely planet of ours.

Chris, your tree sounds spiritual--something that appears to be two but is actually one. Sourwoods are beautiful. xx

Hi Ms. Fonda,
Today I was browsing through my October issue of Southern Living magazine and discovered the “Lady Jane” tulip on page 81. Are you familiar with it? According to the magazine, the pink and white blooms are elegantly shaped. If the bulbs are planted now they will emerge in late March. That tulip reminded of a paragraph from your memoir stating you were known as “Lady Jayne” during your childhood.

From my breakfast nook I can view a lovely sourwood tree in my backyard. I call it my “Vee Tree.” It is remarkable. It is only one tree but to the naked eye it appears to be two trees. It has one root system; however, the base of the trunk splits into a perfect V shape. It is fully grown, with each “trunk extension” at approximately 80 feet or so, including the branches. As the autumn months approach it is always the first tree in my yard to change colors. At this writing all its leaves are a brilliant crimson. It’s funny, but at times that tree reminds me of you. Well—not your person—but it reminds me of the causes you have espoused, e.g. V-Day. It also brings to mind your involvement with the Vagina Monologues. I know this is a somewhat quirky musing but I hope you will find it entertaining.

Chris in ATL
P.S. Did you know “Fun with Dick and Jane” has been released on DVD?

Armand Hammer bought the Leicester Codex by Leonardo Da Vinci many years ago from my family... the Leicester family in the UK, and then his heirs sold it o Bill Gates several years later! The money from that sale helped The Armand Hammer Museum build up and collect many of the beautiful Artefacts the Museum now owns.
Thought you might be interested!
Best wishes
Juliet

P.S I will tell all my readers about Code Pink.
I think people should know 'what's really going on..'

i thought you were using your mac. if your pc, then you need better virus and malware protection. the standard big name products are not so effective...also if you have vista, sometimes it self destructs...i would install Ubuntu as a second partition to have something that has much better security...or have someone do it for you as i know you don't have time to do so yourself...

I spent a few years in International business after graduate school and have had a real interest in the world view. Interestubg to note that Armand Hammer , got rich selling goods to Russian leader Lenin, when they needed it. It made a lot of Art buying for The Hammer, and some real good programs. The world will never learn from the past, and people can still try .
Nice post Jane
